Search Engine Optimization

Now don't go getting delusions of grandeur, thinking that you'll be listed on top of Google for "solar energy" for $1000. It's just not happening. Initially, people turn to SEO for a way to get free traffic. The truth is, free traffic can be expensive. Initially, you'll spend a LOT more for organic listings than you would by simply buying ads on Google. Adwords and other Pay-Per-Click vendors are actually a very good start to see what the demand is for your site's products or services, as well as to test out the usability and organization of your website.

Why isn't the free section of search engines free?

The reason the free part of search engines (aka "natural" or "organic" listings ) isn't free is because you'll have to spend on someone knowledgeable in this field to help you, or you'll have to spend some of your hours doing it yourself. How much should you expect to spend? Whatever it takes to outdo your competitors. Afterall, whoever is listed on the top of Google probably hired a pretty excellent SEO to do the job for them, or maybe they dedicated lots of time themselves. Either way, it's going to be a long battle to displace all ten listings on the top of a major search engine.

Secondly, a huge factor in the Google algorithm is inbound links. This isn't a proprietary secret. The famous patent that made Google what it is today is fundamentally based on the principle that inbound links are used to determine search results. So who's going to give you a link to your site, when in reality, it decreases their listings every time they give out a link? It better be a good friend, or you better be shelling out money.
